I listened to Notes of Blue again, yesterday. Still love it. Honky Tonk is my least favorite album Farrar has put out.
This is how I ranked them a couple years ago. Notes of Blue would fit in around a 8.5 out of ten.

Click to expand.I can't quibble with your considered ratings through Sebastopol, other than a slight nudge or half-nudge here and there (for example, I'd put Wide Swing.at a 9).I don't know Third Shift., only Greenwich Time (from Stone, Steel) so no comment.Just listened to the Slaughter soundtrack and don't consider it to be rating-worthy (just short snippets; which I like.but still.)The On Chant and Strum version (of The Search) would get the 8.5 that you have indicated.
The single album version would, in my opinion, be a tad lower. Slow Hearse doesn't belong as a lead-off song. Chant puts it where it belongs, as the coda.Kerouac: hmm. Maybe.New Multitudes.
I differ with you here, as I give it a 10. I think it is an all around home run. The double-album version.Notes of Blue: probably 7-ish for me. I know the 'don't shove politics down our throats' argument comes up every time a musician releases a song with some political content, but I honestly don't get it. You can take or leave the politics.
I don't get angry when a songwriter presents a perspective on love, or death, or fatherhood, or whatever, that differs from my own. So why is politics a special case?
I'm not going to rag on Dylan for having written Masters of War, The Times They Are A-Changin, With God on Our Side, Chimes of Freedom, or whatever. At first I thought this album was pretty decent, but after another two listens, I found myself really disliking this record. I paid $20 or so for the Indie vinyl version and sold it about a month a go back to the same store for $10, could not have been happier to get something in return.I wish musicians would keep their political views to themselves and quit singing to us about it. One of the only times it has worked for me is on the latest Roger Waters album and it's because I enjoy the music so much.
