The story's first part was published in a weekly Tamil magazine and then published in monthly novels (Palsuvai novel, Ladies novel). Subsequently 5 volumes were published as books by Thirumagal Nilayam. Udayar is a south Indian title. This novel deals with the building of the Tanjore Temple, depicting in detail the mindset of the people, Rajaraja chola's courtiers and relatives. It also throws some light on the significance of the various innovations that were done during the building of the temple.Retrieved from '. It's not a simple task to extract water from air - such is the author's ability to build a 6 volume book just out of a single line - 'The construction of Brihadeeswara Temple'. I simply still cant digest the fact that the story-line is very simple but ran for thousands of pages. Even if it were for a person who would have stayed besides Raja Raja - he would never have written such volumes about the great King's daily experience during the temple's construction. And many a times, you would surely earn why couldn't you have lived (probably yes) during the King's era.
That would make you sob many a times for having missed a 'greater-than-life' opportunity. It's not about the King itself rather its about the society and people as a whole that will moist your eyes. Such a wonderful journey was the reading of this book.Simply put, you can't read this book - you have to EXPERIENCE it. Such a Divine experience.
I would consider this as a conceptual sequel to the Kalki's epic novel Ponniyin Selvan. Balakumaran has once again proved his prowess in his writings by rendering this state of the art book. No wonder, this would be a helm, a feather in his cap and an all time hit to this erstwhile writer. Phew what a breath taking novel.

Expertly written historical fiction. Though it is considered as Ponniyin Selvan’s unofficial sequel (As the story period is after the events based on which the ponniyin selvan was written), this series is a complete different take on the historical events by Balakumaran. For instance, the characters of Uthama Cholan and Sembian Madhevi were totally different from the way it was portrayed in Ponniyin Selvan. Also, the events surrounding Adita Karikalan’s murder was a complete different take in Expertly written historical fiction. Also, the events surrounding Adita Karikalan’s murder was a complete different take in this book. But I did not like Author’s idea of the black magic being involved in the important historical events like Aditha Karikalan’s murder etc. I couldn’t remember any such things in any of Kalki’s historical fictions. I think when writing a historical fiction with based on the real events it is better to avoid such things to give more credit to the book. But still the plot is so interesting and make you stick to the book.
The plot is set in Rajaraja Chola's period, who has been in power for around 16 years after Uttama chola. The story revolves around Rajaraja's ambitious and visionary plan to build a big temple for Lord Shiva. His death is explained from a different vantage point.Brahmarayar and karuvur thevar are new main characters who were not there in Ponniyin selvan. I wonder how such prominent figures did not feature in PS.The non linear narration of the events about karikalan, rajaraja's early life, Uttama chola's rule etc, made the story more interesting.Overall, a good sequel to a great novel.MUST READ after Ponniyin Selvan.
Excellent work by Mr. Balakumaran, I am glad that he has continued the legendary work of Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki. This part deals with how Rajaraja Chola, the successor to the throne of Chola Kingdom, contemplates a grand plan of building the biggest ever magnificent temple for Lord Shiva (Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur) and how he proceeds to lay the foundation for the temple by overcoming the sinister plots of his enemies.Sembian mahadevi character has been given a new dimension and lot Excellent work by Mr. Balakumaran, I am glad that he has continued the legendary work of Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki. Also the Aditya karikalan episode is well articulated and the sequence of events leading until to his death is very thrilling. The author has put in meticulous efforts to provide great details about the functioning of the Chola Kingdom, espionage network, cultural and day to day life aspects of the Tamils belonging to the Chola period.
I think I didn't read this book I was hallucinating like I was living with the Chozhlas and every incident was happening around me! Not one or two times but almost one thousand I told my mom how much I yearn and long for the Chozhlas, how I desire to be one of the Cholzhlan empire! Can a nation be so dedicated to a king?! Can a nation truly come together for noble cause?!
Probably it's not just the Rajarajan who should be credited, but every single person around him and of the empire. Why will not a nation flourish when a nation can have trustees like Krishnan Raman, Panjavan mathavi (My Favourite), Karuvaruthevar, Arunmozhli and so on.
Probably its not just enough to read this book should go to every single place detailed touch and feel it personally though I can't travel back in time to live with the legends. Ponniyin Selvan has created a huge impact in the minds of the readers about the greatest King to ever rule on this planet - King Rajaraja, The Great. Keeping up with what Ponniyin Selvan has done is a very tough task and you will have to wade to pages of history and visit the places of historical prominence in Chola history multiple times to grasp and bring those to writing mixed with the imagination that does not do injustice to any of those legendary characters. Hope the author keeps up to the expectations in the other parts of this novel too. Biased rating though, as I'm not much cared about narration or style but about the theme of building our beloved Big Temple. It speaks about the difference of opinion between Rajaraja Cholan and his son Rajendra Cholan about building the temple. Also the challenges that are in front of Rajarajan before building the historical monument that amazes us even after 1000 years. At places Balakumaran has used ghosts making a good amount of impact in the course, which is not much believable.

Its a great start for the journey towards the making of 'Big Temple'. The transformation of the great 'Raja Raja' who was 'Arunmozhi varman' in ponniyin selven to 'Udayar Sri Raja Raja Thevar' in this novel is sensational. When I read his introduction its just goosebumped me.Along with lots of surprises for me in characterization which differed from ponniyin selvan in some parts standout one was 'Karuvur Thevar'.Hope for some extraordinary Balakumaran just hijacked me with his amazing writings. To view it,Just can't keep myself away from comparing this book to Ponniyin Selvan. Seems like the author has put more effort into making this book into a sequel to Ponniyin Selvan.I read Ponniyin Selvan in 2010. At that point in time, I hadn't read many other books and I enjoyed it completely. Till date when people ask me for book suggestions, I used to suggest them Ponniyin Selvan. Now after reading this book, I feel its no way close to A song of ice and fire. Now thinking back I am scared of rereading Just can't keep myself away from comparing this book to Ponniyin Selvan.
